I am excited to share another finished make today on my blog – my new Kalle Shirtdress by Closet Case Patterns. It has been one of my more ambitious projects over the last few months but I finished it and am in love with how it turned out!
I made it in my favorite fabric – tencel twill. I got this Deep Spruce Tencel Twill from Blackbird Fabrics and it provided some really great structure and drape. They have such a beautiful stock of Tencel twill fabrics!
This project marked a few “firsts” for me – my first time sewing a collar AND buttons! The button placket was the most challenging. So challenging that I sewed it on backwards…oops! That’s what I get for sewing late into the night. At least it made it on somehow and aside from being a bit opposite compared to my other button up garments, it turned out okay!
Also, I experimented by shortening the length 2 inches. I figured that being 5 feet tall I wouldn’t have much to lose…but I kind of did. I can’t lift my arms or bend over without it being too revealing. I’ve made a couple other dresses and skirts before that were hit or miss with length so another lesson learned for me – make a muslin if I am going to play around with lengthening or shortening!
Despite the little hiccup with the button placket, the pattern is super well laid out and really easy to follow. I love that there are SO many ways to customize your garment with all the options available. You can make a shirt or dress with various collar options, and there is even a sleeve expansion that you can buy.
I will definitely be making another Kalle Shirtdress in the future. Perhaps a striped one for spring? I’m also debating on trying to make one without the collar!
