Today I’m sharing one of my most recent sewing projects that I planned back in June 2019. My husband and I went on a weekend trip to Portland, and of course I made sure the Pendleton Woolen Mills Store was one of our stops. I also saw a post that Pendleton WMS made in April 2019 on their blog debuting their 1949 Jacket Sewing Pattern, and I knew I had to grab it during our visit. So basically, this project was a long time coming!
I finished sewing my jacket September 2019 and I’m so in love with it! I made it with a beautiful brown plaid apparel weight wool and I love the vintage chic vibes!
I love that the jacket is lightweight but warm. It’s an unlined jacket, so it actually feels like your favorite comfy flannel with a jacket silhouette. The original pattern didn’t include a waist tie, but the pattern art includes a waist tie and I loved how it looked, so I added one and it was super easy! Just had to add two loops on the side and a belt.
As far as sewing techniques, this jacket called for a flat felled seam and I can now say that I’m obsessed with how clean a flat-felled seam looks! I ended up using this technique on a few other garments I made after this coat. As far as adding special touches to my jacket, since this jacket is unlined and I wanted it to look more like a jacket rather than a nice flannel, I decided to finish my seams and raw edges with a Hong Kong finish. I made my own bias tape using brown lining fabric because I didn’t want it to get too bulky. I love that it gives it a more finished look than serged seams!
When it came to style this jacket, I really wanted to go for the modern vintage chic look. To modernize my look, I threw on my new favorite boots – a pair of VERY short girl friendly over-the-knee boots! I’ve been wanting to try over-the-knee boots for a while now but I was nervous because I’m only 5’0” and have very muscular calves and thighs. This pair I got on Amazon are perfect and I highly recommend if you are in the market for some over-the-knee boots but have been nervous to try them!
To add on to the modern vintage chic look, I decided to go with my trusty Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere 25 handbag, sans bandouliere. This LV bag is probably the most luxurious thing I own, but here’s why I decided to invest in this bag – I want one handbag and one handbag only for many many years to come. I believe in investing in timeless wardrobe staples and the LV Speedy has stood the test of time. I also hope this becomes an heirloom piece that I can pass on to a future daughter, if we have one! That way, I can buy myself another one – hah! Kidding…maybe. Also, I make my own clothes. So treat yo’ self, right?
If you’re wanting to go for the vintage chic look, I highly recommend the Pendleton 1949 Jacket sewing pattern! I think you may have to call the Pendleton Woolen Mills store in Oregon to purchase it, but it is definitely worth picking up the phone for!
