The Stitch Witch Patterns Bathurst Top is a cute and simple open-back top that is a great sewing pattern for beginners! Read more for more photos and a full pattern review.
It’s been a hot summer here in Spokane, WA! It’s my first summer here since moving, and it has been so nice to enjoy the hot weather. Being outdoors and going on walks is really all we can do right now due to COVID, so I’ve been wearing lighter clothing these days.
With that said, I was recently gifted a sewing pattern from a new sewing pattern designer, Stitch Witch Patterns. Ever since she released her first pattern, she has been a huge hit! The pattern I received was the Bathurst Top pattern. It has been the perfect top for wearing in this hot summer weather!
The Stitch Witch Patterns Bathurst Top
This top is a super cute top with an open-back that ties at the waist. There are two options – short crop length and longer length. I love the simplicity of the top, and the open-back with the waist ties is what really makes it striking!
When I received the Stitch Witch Bathurst Top pattern and looked through the instructions, my initial impression was that it looked very easy and beginner-friendly. I estimated that I could sew the top in around 2-3 hours. When looking at the fabric requirements and laying out the pattern pieces, I also thought that this would be a great pattern for busting through my fabric stash. I was able to do some sewing Tetris and squeezed all my pattern pieces out of leftover Tencel Twill fabric. I previously used the fabric for my Seamwork Georgia Dress I made 2 years ago.

Sizing, Adjustments, and Customization
I chose to sew a size 8. My measurements are 34-29-38 and the size 8 measurements are 34-27-36. After looking at the measurement chart and finished garment measurements, I decided to use the bust measurement for choosing my size. Since the back of the Bathurst Top is open and ties at the waist, I figured I had some leeway at the waist and hip.
I didn’t make any additional adjustments or customizations.
The Sewing Process
Sewing the Bathurst Top was so quick and easy! I estimated that I could sew this within a couple hours and I definitely accomplished it. There isn’t anything complicated about this pattern. I think the most time consuming task for me was to sew the darts. In my opinion, darts aren’t even that complicated to begin with. So that says a lot about how quickly this garment sews up!
My Final Impression of the Stitch Witch Patterns Bathurst Top
After sewing this top, I’m super hooked on Stitch Witch Patterns. I will definitely be making more of her patterns. I think that the Bathurst Top is an excellent beginner sewing pattern. It teaches common garment construction methods such as sewing a neckline/armhole facing or a waist tie. In the future I hope to teach sewing lessons and will definitely be putting this on my list of recommended beginner patterns!
Overall, I’m super happy with how quick and easy of a project this was! It’s a super cute top that I will be wearing through the rest of the summer. It will also make a great top for wearing around the house as I continue to work from home through the rest of the year. And yes, I am one of those people who will still wear shorts and a tank top even in the fall and winter months.
I hope you enjoyed my review of the Stitch Witch Patterns Bathurst Top! If you sewed this pattern and found my review to be helpful, let me know. I’d love to see what you’ve made!
