Over Labor Day weekend, I had the pleasure of going on a weekend getaway with girlfriends at the Royal Palms Resort in Scottsdale, AZ. For those of you who have been following me on Instagram, you know that this trip was VERY much needed as over the last month I have been on leave from work to tend to my mental and physical health. I experienced a lot of guilt and debated if I should even go, but I knew that it would be a nice break from doctor’s visits and sitting around at home. Plus, I’d be getting plenty of Vitamin D!
Although I did still have a couple down days on the trip, I’m so glad that we still went, because the Royal Palms is such a beautiful resort with so much history. It was originally a Spanish Villa built in the 1920s, but it was turned into a resort in the 1930s. Our stay was amazing, and we were able to take advantage of off-season pricing because of the extreme Arizona heat during the summer months. It worked out for us, because we’ve had a drab Seattle summer. I will DEFINITELY be coming back, hopefully for a romantic winter getaway with my husband.

Another fun part of this trip was that I finally got to wear my DIY handmade swimwear! I have been crazy about Katie Fredrickson’s Edgewater Ave swimsuit patterns – I sewed 3 swimsuits this summer! She makes sewing swimwear so easy with video tutorials and easy to assemble PDF patterns.
One of my swimsuits that I sewed is the Carter One Piece. Guys, I am OBSESSED with this swimsuit!!! I love that you get the satisfaction of both a one-piece and two-piece swimsuit. The tie front is so cute! I made this swimsuit in a Dusty Rose Ribbed Swim fabric from Blackbird Fabrics. It was a more challenging swimsuit to sew, but Katie made it very easy to follow along with her video tutorial on YouTube.

On top of sewing swimsuits, I also made myself a DIY sarong wrap that also worked as a cover up for my swimsuit while walking around the resort. Making it was fairly easy – I purchased 2 yards of this fun Silky Crinkle Rayon Butterfly Floral fabric from Joann Fabrics. I cut it to be 72 inches wide and 36 inches long, then finished it with a narrow hem.

The second swimsuit I wore was this fun lavender two-piece made with the Edgewater Ave Becca Top and Edgewater Ave Lucy Bottoms. This swimsuit was made using a Lavender Nylon Swim Tricot from Blackbird Fabrics. For our first full day at the resort, we treated ourselves to staying in one of the Pool Cabanas, and it was definitely nice to have guaranteed shade in 107 degree weather!

Overall, we had an amazing stay at the Royal Palms and I had a lot of fun sporting my handmade swimsuits. The days were hot, but the sunsets were beautiful and I look forward to returning for another relaxing stay!
